Our Growing Green Mission Statement:
To say we are Going Green is to imply that we have only recently started GREEN initiatives. At Joseph Merritt & Company, we say GROWING GREEN because implementing GREEN practices has been an ever growing mission and project of ours.
As printing companies pushed for offset printing many years back, Joseph Merritt & Company insisted on investing in the new digital printing process of On-Demand. Embracing On-Demand printing has been a remarkable feat in the days of offset, when quantity printing means more money for the printer.
What's so great about On-Demand and digital printing? Well, you print only what you need, when you need it, significantly reducing the amount of paper and energy it takes to produce your print job. Think of this scenario:
You own a movie store that rents and sells movies of all kinds. Your sales have been dwindling over the course of the year and you want to bring those profits back up. You have a database of 10,000 customers you would like to send a direct mail piece with a new promotion. Research shows that a low percent of people will look at your card and respond. What happens to the rest of the cards you sent? They are probably going to be thrown out (and probably not recycled). For argument's sake, let's say 1,000 people responded, the other 9,000 cards you sent were thrown out or disregarded. In postage alone, that's $2,520 wasted (based on a 4"x6" card and 3rd class presorted rate of $0.28 per piece). What if you could send 2,500 cards with Variable Data Printing to address each person by name and, depending on the complexity of your customer database, customize each person's postcard by the types of movies they like. You will have a more targeted campaign. Making the cards more individualized, you will increase awareness of your promotion, and ultimately your business. Your success on the campaign will trigger multiple phases of mailings in order to reach all 10,000 customers. However, you have done it in a way that reduces the paper and energy it requires, and you have increased your return on your investment.

Upon request, Joseph Merritt can offer our customers 100% post-consumer-based paper products for their projects, and most of our daily print jobs are on 30% post-consumer-based paper products. Moreover, we buy from Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) or Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified paper mills to ensure we leave a smaller carbon footprint on the environment.
Recycle Plug Program:
Through our partnership with Azon, we collect and recycle all end caps that come with each roll of paper used to print our customers' architectural drawings. With approximately 450 rolls used each month times 2 caps per roll, that's roughly 900 caps per month reused for future manufactured paper rolls. Manufacturing energy and money is saved through this initiative.
Our new liquid lamination capabilities allow us to provide project finishing services for you with less waste and with a UV curable process. Great for dimensional Point-of-Purchase displays, our liquid laminator system from Neschen Americas adds durability to your print job without significant added expenses and with a minimal carbon footprint. Take a peek at our other GREEN initiatives:
Recycling waste paper from the following product groups: Construction document printing, Print On-Demand, and Big Color Graphics
On-line architectural/engineering drawing and specification distribution through PlanWell®
Providing large format graphics on biodegradable styrene and Insite® Biodegradable foam board for direct-to-print applications
More e-mail blasts for direct marketing while using more targeted direct mailing campaigns as supplemental marketing
Recycling numerous wooden pallets per week as used in the delivery of all our paper products
Our Scanning & Information Management division allows our customers to digitally archive and distribute vital documentation across the office or across the country without the need for faxing and copying.
The average document gets copied 19 times, while 7.5% of those documents are lost. (SOURCE: Coopers & Lybrand)
In 1995, we became the first printer in the Northeast to offer plain paper copies for the Architectural/Engineering/Construction (A/E/C) Industry in lieu of traditional ammonia-based blueprints. This provided customers with a cleaner, environmentally improved means for reproducing plans at the same price.
How can you become a part of the GREEN initiative? Turn to Joseph Merritt for all your printing and imaging needs.
We're not Going Green, we're Growing Green.
